An online program offering an age-appropriate, yet comprehensive introduction to puberty that emphasises wellbeing, positive body image and respectful relationships. Designed for 8 – 12 year olds and their trusted adults.
All kids have a slightly different reaction to the puberty chat. Some find it a new and interesting topic to talk about and others put their fingers in their ears and say, “Lalalalalala…..”
No matter what audience type you are faced with – don’t worry. I’ve got you covered. This program promises to do all the heavy lifting for you. I’m here to make conversations fun and easy, and give your child the very best as they journey towards adolescence.
Thanks for having me in your home,
Talking About Puberty is an age appropriate, yet comprehensive online program that gives
8 – 12-year-olds an important understanding of the body they were born with, and the changes it will undergo through puberty. All content is based on the latest sexual health research and Michelle’s 25 years experience teaching sexual health in schools.
Content is directed to all tweens, although separate videos are provided for boys’ and girls’ body parts and body changes. That way, tweens can view them when they are ready (please see content overview below). I hope this gives tweens an opportunity to self-pace the content provided. I’d like to firstly see them gain an understanding of themselves; and secondly, an understanding of others.

Is this program for boys and girls?
This program is designed for all tweens and provides information on the body they were born with. It responds to research that emphasises that different genders are not learning enough about what the other one goes through in puberty; and that traits like empathy can be encouraged through early education about differences. Separate videos are provided for lessons on boys’ and girls’ body parts and body changes, so tweens can view them when they are ready.
Does this program represent gender fluidity?
Amongst one of the most complex issues within relationship and sex education is that of gender fluidity. As a society, we have been changing and refocusing the discussion around gender and sexuality, of which I would like to acknowledge. The research around transgender and gender diverse students is still in its infancy, with most research on gender fluidity surrounding adult participants.
This programme has aimed to use gender neutral language wherever possible. It refers to the male and female anatomy assigned at birth (with mention that children can be born intersex) and provides information about changes that most children will experience given the body they were born with.
This programme does not specifically discuss gender fluidity introduces the concept of “tricky questions”. These are questions that take time to answer and need the help of trusted adults.
Does this program discuss sexual activity?
This program is purposefully contained to body parts and changes associated with puberty, and does not expand greatly on sex or sexual activity. It does references egg and sperm meeting to make an embryo when explaining the menstrual cycle and the role of sperm.
What are the benefits of this program?
This program is firmly based on the concept that comprehensive sexual health education reduces the risk of unsafe choices during adolescence. And additionally, and of equal importance, those who have had education from trusted adults are more likely to face puberty with confidence and adapt well.
How does this program involve parents?
This program wholeheartedly recognises that one trusted adult in a child’s life is the greatest factor in their wellbeing and mental health, and that discussions about puberty lay a solid foundation for further questions. That being the case, every effort has been made to connect tweens to their trusted adults. It also aims to support conversations by offering discussion questions and reading tasks at the end of each session.
The most wonderful feedback we get is about the conversations that parents and tweens have had. Here is just a few of the testimonies we have received:
Love this! Our 9 yo grabbed it and devoured it. It’s such and approachable, non-threating book. I’m sure our big one will sneakily pick it up soon. Melissa E
My daughter and I read this together each night, we are just about finished. It has been so good! It’s helped us both be more open to talking about these sensitive topics plus we’ve really bonded. There have also been a few funny conversations too. Kylie H
I’m a primary teacher but bought them for my children, aged 8 & 12 yrs. So well written, relatable & great for kids. A valuable resource I’d highly recommend! 👌 Etia G
Hello thank you so much for the book. It arrived a couple of days ago and my boy has pretty much devoured it 😂 it s such great content and such perfect tone for our tweens. He s been reading it aloud to me and asking questions along the way. Even I learned things too. Thank you so much for this writing this book. Amazing work😀. Martha B
Just finished reading this with my 12 year old. It was brilliant and helped us communicate and discuss puberty openly. We had a laugh and my son who has mild ID learnt so much and got over some of the more uncomfortable bits. Thank you for a wonderfully informative and fun book. Amanda C
