Upper Primary Curriculum
Partnering with Schools and parents to prepare young lives
Sexual Health is an important curriculum responsibility of every school as it provides opportunities for students to develop both knowledge and attitudes about their developing sexuality.
Michelle’s curriculum was originally developed in consultation with a dedicated group of P & C members and school principals who wanted to ensure that values and healthy relationships underpinned the content provided to children. Our curriculum covers a range of sexual health content, values, relationship strategies and identity building concepts. Schools are welcome to adjust the nature of content at their discretion.
This curriculum can be tailor-made to the suit the needs of your school. It aims to:
• Offer age appropriate medically accurate information
• Deliver content in an engaging and relatable way
• Emphasise the values that underpin healthy relationships
• Address cyber-safety as a major sex educator in child’s world
• Ensure children are neither overexposed nor misinformed
• Be sensitive to the diverse range of maturity in each classroom
• Involve parents and communities in the process
• Prepare children for the real pressures they will face in high school
The program contains 3 x 50-minute lessons for both year 5 and 6, based on the content below.
Year 5 – Foundations
• Session 1: Puberty (part 1)
• Session 2: Where do Babies Come From (part 1)
• Session 3: Staying Safe Online (part 1)
Year 6 – Preparing for High School
• Session 1: Puberty (part 2)
• Session 2: Where do Babies Come From (part 2)
• Session 3: Staying Safe Online (part 2)
This curriculum is accompanied by a parent night which provides parents with the opportunity to discuss and ask questions about the curriculum. The night will also give parents practical tips on how to talk to their child about sex.
We were lucky enough to have Michelle speak to our parent community and it was such a positive and uplifting event. People walked away feeling good about what they were already doing but also armed with really practical ways to address issues that they weren’t sure how to handle. I would thoroughly recommend Michelle for speaking, not only to parents, but also to students. Thanks Michelle!
Natalie Doherty, St Joseph’s Primary School P & C President
Michelle delivered the best sexual health lessons I have seen in my 20 years of teaching. She showed a genuine interest in the students while delivering entertaining, visually engaging and accurate information. Her presentation took the fear out of the subject matter and made it fun. I without hesitation recommend the program.
Rick Herd, Patrick Rd State School Year 5 teacher
Michelle has delivered our sexual health program for over seven years. Coupled with a comprehensive parent information session, the program ticks all the boxes for us, and includes loads of entertaining and educational moments for every student.
Katie Stubbing, Deputy Principal Ferny Grove State School
Michelle has been working with our students for many years. She provides a balanced, engaging and educational perspective that is pitched at the perfect level for year 5 and 6. Our children not only learn about the changes their bodies will undergo, but more importantly, they learn about sound positive values that sit behind human sexuality. Michelle works with our parent community to explain the program and shares insightful lessons as they move into this new stage of parenthood. We couldn’t image teaching human sexuality any other way.
