MEET OUR SPEAKERS

Building Resilience: The Power of One Caring Adult
Michelle Mitchell | Parenting Educator

One of the most powerful ways to support kids is equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to face challenges when life feels tough. This empowering session dives into the real meaning of resilience —what it is, what it isn’t, and the impact caring adults can make on a child’s ability to adapt and grow. Research shows that having just one caring adult can be the difference between a child developing resilience in tough times or struggling to cope. Michelle will leave you with practical tools to foster self-trust, address intrusive thoughts tune to regulation strategies that work. She will also discuss tips to help parents know when and how to communicate with tweens and teens about accessing professional support.

About Michelle: Michelle is an author and speaker, sought after for her compassionate and grounded advice for parenting tweens and teens. She began as a classroom teacher but soon found a special interest in wellbeing. In 2000 she left teaching to establish a health promotion charity and psychology clinic which delivered life skills programs and psychological services to thousands of young people and their families each year. Today she uses her experience to write and speak in schools, community events and through media. The core of her work is helping parents be the trusted, leadership presence that their growing kids need.

Solving Anxiety With “Wild Creature Mind”
Steve Biddulph | Psychologist | Best Selling Author

There’s no getting around it, anxiety is hammering this generation of kids, from early primary right into their teens.  And we adults are often not far behind.  Its the biggest mental health problem the world has ever had. But the answer might lie in a direction nobody was thinking of – that we have been using the wrong part of our mind.  New findings from brain science show that its our right brain – our Wild Creature Mind, that helps us to convert anxiety, instead of fighting with it.
Steve will teach you the simple brain-body skills you can teach your children,  and find a whole new direction in how to be happy in your own skin.  A revolution in the psychology world which you can put to use right away.

We will be streaming this session live from Steve’s Tasmanian home. His body is getting old, but his wisdom is innovative and we needed to transport him to us!

About Steve: Steve is old now (his words not ours!) but when he was young he wrote the top selling parenting book of this century – Raising Boys, and also Raising Girls and The New Manhood.  He was a psychologist for nearly 40 years.  He pioneered the positive, kind and affectionate approach to parenting which we now take for granted, but is still deeply concerned about our world’ future, and the need to make our kids strong and fiercely loving. He believes his generation have a responsibility to fight for the survival of those to come, and he blogs about this in his Decade of Farewell and Wild Creature Mind online projects.

Big Feelings, Big Behaviour
Karen Young | Neuroscientist | Anxiety Specialist

Big feelings are a very normal part of development. For many children, big feelings will drive big behaviour which can be confusing and challenging for the adults who care for them. There is a good reason for this, and the more we understand the what, why, and how of feelings and the behaviours they fuel, the more we will be able to respond to young people (and ourselves) in more effective, compassionate ways. Ultimately, our responses will nurture the vital foundations of self-regulation in children, as well as their capacity to feel and express the full range of human emotions in ways that don’t cause breakage for themselves or others.

This workshop has been specifically designed for parents and carers. We will explore where big feelings and big behaviour come from, and discuss practical strategies for responding to big feelings and big behaviour in the moment, including the most challenging behaviour. We will also explore how to lead young people in co-regulation rather than co-dysregulation, why this feels tough sometimes (and what to do when that happens), how to repair relational collisions, and how to nurture the development of self-regulation and social and emotional wellbeing in all young people.

About Karen: Karen has worked as a psychologist in private practice and in educational and organisational settings. She has lectured and has extensive experience in the facilitation of personal growth. Her honours degree in Psychology and Masters in Gestalt Therapy have come in handy at times.

Beyond the Label: Empowering Parents to Nurture Neurodivergent Kids
Matt Runnalls | Author | Mental Health Advocate and Founder of Mindfull Aus

What does the world look like from a child’s eyes? What do they truly need to see, hear, and feel to thrive? This session explores how we can better support children through empathy, connection, and understanding. In a world quick to label, we shift the perspective to one of love and empowerment, helping children feel validated in their emotions and celebrated for their uniqueness. We’ll dive into how to nurture vulnerability and create space for growth, all while modeling the behaviours we want to see in them. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how to foster meaningful connections, close emotional loops, and become the role models their children need for healthy development.

Drawing from his own lived experiences, Matt aims to create open platforms for communication, encouraging individuals and communities to address and manage their well-being.

About Matt: In 2016, Matt founded Mindfull Aus, a not-for-profit mental health foundation. As a full-time advocate, he has delivered over 2,500 speeches, workshops, and events across Australia, Canada and the U.S., working with leading mental health organisations.  Matt is trained in various psychological modalities, and as a best-selling author, Australia Day Medalist and award-winning speaker, Matt empowers audiences with practical tools for behaviour, well-being & being our best self. His dedication to breaking the silence around mental health makes him a global change agent.
